4A Waste Management Survey
Top Tip: Knowing what really happens when you put something in the trash really helps understand WHY going plastic free is so important – here is where to start.
Here are the questions you should find the answers to.
Prepare a presentation and decide the best way to share with your school community.
Where does it go? |
|
Logistics in place for waste management |
o Which company is the solid waste hauler contracted by the school? o Which company picks up the recycling (they may be different)? o How often is waste picked up from campus? o Where does waste go once it leaves campus? o Where does it go after that? o How much does waste disposal cost the school? |
Where do we put our waste? |
o How many trash bins are on school campus? o How many recycling bins? (for what types of waste)? o What recycling items are accepted by the current recycling or waste contractor? o Does the solid waste contractor accept industrially compostable plastics? o Is there industrial composting near your region? o Is our recycling separated or single stream? Do we sort it or does someone else do this? (called single stream recycling) |
Bin audit around school |
o Is trash being properly sorted on campus? o If not, what are the issues? Example: Poor signage, people don’t understand the impact? They don't think it is important |
Recycling |
o What waste is recycled? o What waste is NOT recycled? |
Recycled |
o What is actually done with the material sent for recycling?
|
ASSIGNMENT:
o How much waste was generated by the school (today or this week)?
o Categorise the waste. What percent is food waste, paper, plastic, metal, other?
o Where can you make a difference on the waste generated by the school?
