4A Waste Management Survey

Top Tip:  Knowing what really happens when you put something in the trash really helps understand WHY going plastic free is so important – here is where to start.

Here are the questions you should find the answers to.

Prepare a presentation and decide the best way to share with your school community.

Where does it go?

Logistics in place for waste management

o Which company is the solid waste hauler contracted by the school?

o Which company picks up the recycling (they may be different)?

o How often is waste picked up from campus?

o Where does waste go once it leaves campus?

o Where does it go after that?

o How much does waste disposal cost the school?

Where do we put our waste?

o How many trash bins are on school campus?

o How many recycling bins? (for what types of waste)?

o What recycling items are accepted by the current recycling or waste contractor?

o Does the solid waste contractor accept industrially compostable plastics?

o Is there industrial composting near your region?

o  Is our recycling separated or single stream?  Do we sort it or does someone else do this? (called single stream recycling)

Bin audit around     school

Is trash being properly sorted on campus?

If not, what are the issues? Example:  Poor signage, people don’t understand the impact? They don't think it is important

Recycling

o What waste is recycled?

o What waste is NOT recycled?

Recycled

o What is actually done with the material sent for recycling?

ASSIGNMENT:

o How much waste was generated by the school (today or this week)?

o Categorise the waste.  What percent is food waste, paper, plastic, metal, other?

o Where can you make a difference on the waste generated by the school?
